THIS INTERNSHIP IS NOT CURRENTLY OFFERED — please see our Online Writer II internship description.

Fairness.com LLC, publisher of the non-commercial Fairness.com website offers service learning writing internships for (i) Journalism students who want practical writing experience and clips in an online environment, and (ii) other students who want to explore a broad, fairness-related area of knowedge (e.g. law, politics, environmentalism, business, etc.).

Intern Duties

1. Follow the online media's coverage of a topic you choose

Each Intern chooses a broad topic when the internship is first arranged. When the internship begins, you and your supervisor will decide which online publications you will monitor for fairness-relevant articles on your topic. Some of the publications will be general interest (e.g. The New York Times, Salon.com), while others may be specific to your selected topic.

2. Write abstracts of the most important fairness-related articles

You'll read or skim all articles in those publications that are relevant to your topic and write short 1-paragraph abstracts (usually 300-500 words) about the most important of those articles. Interns generally write 1-2 abstracts per hour and input the abstracts and basic bibliographic information about the article into Fairness.com's web-based software for publication.

3. Write original articles for publication

Roughly 20% of your time will be spent researching and writing one or more original articles on your topic. Given Fairness.com's "general layman" audience, these are generally magazine article length (internship-long research papers are possible, but not preferred). Subject to our standard editorial review, we will publish your article(s) on the Fairness.com website; Fairness.com or you can also arrange to have it published elsewhere.

[Note: Fairness.com also offers Editing Internships.]

Unusual Features of the Internships:

The internships are unpaid, but many interns arrange to receive academic and/or service learning credits for their work through their faculty advisor or Career Center. Fairness.com is happy to coordinate with such programs.
