If you're new to the writing business, there are many pitfalls awaiting you (primarily low wages and unfair contracts).

Protect yourself from being exploited; spend some time browsing several of these sites before committing to any projects, and have any contract reviewed by someone specifically knowledgeable about publishing. We very highly recommend spending the money on publishing lawyer, but at least have a regular lawyer or professional writer or legally-minded friend take a look (in that order of preference) to hopefully catch anything egregious.

Note: Another good step is to talk with one or more professional writers about your situation; they can give you at least a good idea of key issues to be aware of and maybe provide some additional helpful suggestions (e.g. local writers groups, good online discussion groups in your genre, job leads, etc.).
