Deported Terror Suspect Details Torture in Syria: Canadian's Case Called Typical of CIA
- Date: November 5, 2003
- QUOTE: A Canadian citizen who was detained last year at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York as a suspected terrorist said Tuesday he was secretly deported to Syria and endured 10 months of torture in a Syrian prison.
- ABSTRACT: The CIA maintains that their apprehension and rendering over ("renditions") of suspected terrorists to the foreign intelligence agencies of other countries for interrogation using torture and other abuse is a legitimate tool for fighting terrorism. Human rights group are of course opposed (as are some who feel torture elicits as much false information as valuable information). This article gives a case study of a Canadian citizen rendered over to Syria.
