Poisons From Afar Threaten Arctic Mothers, Traditions: Toxins, Coming North by Air and Water, Enter Inuit Food Chain

Date: April 11, 2004
Author: Deneen L. Brown
QUOTE: Scientists say the Arctic, once considered pristine and unspoiled, has become a sinkhole for pollutants. The contaminants -- including heavy metals, mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs, DDT and other pesticides -- come north by air and water.

ABSTRACT: The Artic, one of the last pristine areas of the world, is becoming more and more polluted. Global climate change, along with an inflow of heavy metals and other pollutants, are causing new worries and hardships for the native Inuit. Because this new pollution comes from out-of-area, the local officials and the Inuit have limited ability to remedy or mitigate the problem.
