Bush Apologizes, Calls Abuse 'Stain' on Nation: A Stain on Our Country's Honor And Our Country's Reputation'
- Date: May 7, 2004
- QUOTE: "I told him [King Abdullah] I was sorry for the humiliation suffered by the Iraqi prisoners, and the humiliation suffered by their families," Bush said. "
- ABSTRACT: President Bush apologized to the Arab world at large for the abuse of some prisoners by Americans at a prison in Iraq. The President has said that he did not know about the pictures or the Army investigation into abuse until they were made public by the media, though some have claimed that the president may have known about the abuse as early as January. While there is a consensus among politicians that such abuse is repugnant, there is disagreement about who is responsible and who should be held accountable for it.
