E.P.A Nears Pact On Waste by Processors of Livestock
- Date: June 3, 2004
- QUOTE: The Environmental Protection Agency is close to reaching an agreement with some of the nations largest animal processors that would lay the groundwork for the first federal emission standards for companies that process millions of pigs, cows and chickens every day.
- ABSTRACT: The Environmental Protection Agency and the meat industry (excluding beef) are trying to agree on the first national standards for handling animal wastes. Critics charge that the companies would be allowed to continue their unregulated pollution for 8-10 years while studies are carried out, and the companies are exempt from prosecution for past pollution. The companies contend that the study period would not be so long and that they should not be expected to compile data that could be used to prosecute them.
