Justices Limit the Reach of Arbitration Law
- Date: January 16, 2002
- QUOTE: The Supreme Court ruled today that arbitration agreements that bar employees from suing their employers for discrimination cannot prevent a federal agency from going to court on the workers' behalf and seeking back pay, damages and reinstatement for victims of discrimination.
- ABSTRACT: Employers who require statements to take matters of dispute to an arbitration panel instead of the court of law were dealt a blow as the Supreme Court ruled that the government may intervene and proceed to court on an employee's behalf. This decision grants more rights to employees, who now have greater course of action in case of conflict.
