The Ethicist: Snowy Profits

Date: February 17, 2002
Author: Randy Cohen
QUOTE: If a local runs his car off the road, we pull him out free, but if a tourist gets stuck in the snow, we charge $20. (We can always tell the difference.) Our rationale: Tourists have more money than locals, and a tow-truck operator charges even more than us.

ABSTRACT:
ABSTRACT: (1) Is it ethical to charge visiting tourists for services you offer free to local residents? (2) If a child is living independently a year after college graduation but then decides to go to graduate school, must the parents disclose their ability to pay the tuition or can the young person be considered independent and eligible for financial need funds? (3) If you receive an inheritance, is it proper to use any of that money for causes your deceased benefactor would not have approved of?
