ABSTRACT: South Korea's national assembly has rejected President Kim Dae Jung's appointment of Chang Sang as Prime Minister, crushing the President's attempt to appoint a woman to the position. Although the rejection came after a lengthy debate about Sang's real estate dealings and educational background, many believe that the true reason for her rejection is her gender. A leader of the Grand National Party even remarked, "It is very disturbing to think that a woman will become head of state if President Kim cannot carry out his duties."
