New Child Welfare Head in Florida Is Drawing Fire

Date: August 17, 2002

QUOTE: Gov. Jeb Bush's appointee to head Florida's troubled child welfare agency is not even on the job yet and already the appointee...has come under fire.

ABSTRACT: Gov. Jeb Bush's appointee to head Florida's troubled child welfare agency is drawing criticism for a religious essay entitled “The Christian World View of the Family” which bears his name on the cover. The essay supports spanking children to the point of “temporary and superficial bruises and welts,” denounces abortion, and opposes parenting by gays and women in the workforce. The essay has prompted some to call for Jerry Reiger’s removal before he’s even begun his job as head of the child welfare agency.
