ABSTRACT: Crime often runs in families. In fact, 47 percent of inmates in state prisons have a parent or other close relative that has been incarcerated. Many children who grow up in families where drug use, poverty, neglect, and abuse are common later imitate their parents and turn to a life of crime. States have paid little attention to the problem, but Oregon has recently initiated a program designed to help break the family cycle of crime.
