Ends, means and barbarity: torture in the United States
- Date: January 9, 2003
- QUOTE: Torture has been outlawed in all circumstances everywhere. But global terrorism may be leading America to bend the rules.
- ABSTRACT: A Washington Post article reported that the United States, as part of its war on terror, has shown an about face on a long-standing policy not to torture prisoners. This article asks if torture is ever justifiable and wonders what precedent such a policy shift could set for the future.
--- Andrew Satter
ABSTRACT: In an effort to defeat al-Qaeda, American officials are reportedly torturing and handing over suspects to Afghanistan, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco, countries known for their brutal treatment of prisoners. Although banned, Amnesty International reports that prisoners are tortured in more than 130 countries. Transferring a prisoner to any country to be tortured is also outlawed under the International Convention Against Torture --- yemisrach benalfew
