A Horse Whisperer's Tale Trails Dominick Dunne

Date: January 28, 2003
Author: Felicity Barringer
QUOTE: ...Mr. Dunne's frequent repetition of versions of this unsubstantiated tale — on television, in Vanity Fair, at dinner parties — raises the question of whether and when journalists can traffic publicly in rank rumor.

ABSTRACT: A suit against author Dominick Dunne has raised questions regarding journalist' rights to make use of rumor. Dunne has been sued for slander for broadcasting on live television and radio rumors about former congressman Gary Condit. Though there are laws against broadcasting unsubstantiated rumors, some argue that live broadcasts are 'first drafts' and cannot be held to the same standards as print journalism.
