Consumer Webwatch

Self Description

April 2004: "Who we are. Consumer WebWatch is a three-year, grant-funded project of Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, the Consumer Reports Travel Letter and the Consumer Reports Health Letter. Through research, through the promotion of guidelines for best practices and other analytical means, we seek to improve consumer trust in the World Wide Web. You can read a brief history of the project here.

We plan to use the methods developed by Consumer Reports staff for their successful e-Ratings of sites, to begin rating Web sites on categories that will include: disclosure of transaction fees and business partnerships relevant to consumers; how clearly sites tell consumers what their privacy policies are, and whether they disclose how any data collected from the consumer will be used; how clearly and consistently Web sites label advertising, and whether they clearly separate editorial content from advertising, "advertorials," advertising supplements and the like, and other categories..."
